Composted Loam Topdressing in Wareham, MA
When Pina was referred to Mighty Lawn in late September by one of her relatives who uses our service. Her Wareham lawn was sparse, the soil was sandy, and parts of the lawn were located in both heavily shaded and highly sunny conditions. Additionally, the lawn is on a hill that slopes down into a lake, providing runoff challenges to installing soil and seed. Upon initial inspection, it was determined that adding 3-4 inches of composted loam topdressing, and seeding would be a more efficient and long-term solution than laying sod due to the shady environmental conditions.
The initial project took place on the 5th of October, later into the germination season than Mighty Lawn typically performed seed projects. Because of this, and because of the largely shady environment, we opted to use a blend of ryegrasses and fine fescues to seed most of the property, and only used our custom sunny seed blend in small areas in the front of the property. We applied 8 yards of composted loam across the 1,200 square foot lawn area. Most of the loam was concentrated in the back and side yards where the need for soil augmentation was greatest. Additionally, 50 lbs. of grass seed was applied across the property.
Most of the project turned out as intended, but there were patches where soil had migrated down the hill after a rainstorm. Mighty Lawn returned to the property one week later for a property check-in, and was able to apply seed to the water eroded areas to rectify the situation. Proper watering expectations were discussed with the client, and today the lawn is thick, green, and uniform in appearance, where before it consisted mostly of sand.
